The Maccabean Revolt, which happened in the second century BCE, is described in a set of historical and religious texts known as The Books of Maccabees. Greek, the language of the Hellenistic civilisation that ruled the Near East at the time, was used for writing the original versions of these texts. However, because they were not written in Hebrew, the language of the Jewish Scriptures, they were removed from the collection.

The Books of Maccabees were later rejected by Protestants during the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century and removed from their Bibles as a portion of writings known as the Apocrypha. The founders of the Reformation believed that certain passages should not be included in the canon of Scripture because they didn't have the same authority as the rest of the Bible.

Despite this, Catholics and Orthodox Christians include the Books of Maccabees in their Bibles because they believe that they're a part of the Old Testament.
