Earthquakes are usually caused by:

d. collision of tectonic plates

Tectonic plates are large slabs of Earth's lithosphere (the outer shell of the Earth) that move slowly over the asthenosphere (a more fluid layer beneath the lithosphere). The movement of these plates can lead to the buildup of stress along geological faults. When this stress is released, it causes the shaking of the ground that we know as an earthquake. This can happen due to the collision of tectonic plates, as well as other types of interactions such as plates moving past each other or pulling apart.
