If a person suffers a gunshot or knife wound to the chest, a pneumothorax can result. Essentially a hole in the chest cavity, air from the outside can pass directly into the pleural cavity. What effect would this have on lung function?

Pneumothorax is a lung condition that occurs due to damage to the lungs. Some of the symptoms include breathing difficulty, rapid breathing, breathlessness, and chest pain. It is diagnosed through an X-ray or CT (computed tomography) scan.
