They may have had to adapt to the sheer lack of proper amenities in the reservations, as most supermarkets, stores and the sort were outside of the reservation itself. Also they must also adapt to the lack of avaliable jobs, and of course the bad living in the reservations + the mere fact that federal troops/settlers may settle and even steal your land
