Answer:

Framing algebraic expressions:

(i) The sum of 6 and x . Just add 6 and x

Expression: 6 + x

(ii) 3 more than a number y. Add 3 to y.

Expression: 3 + y

(iii) One third of a number x. Multiply (1/3) and x.

Expression:
\sf(1)/(3)x

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(iv) One-half of the sum of number x and y. First add x and y & then multiply the result by (1/2).
Expression:
\sf (1)/(2)(x+y)=(x+y)/(2)
(v) Number y less than a number 7. Subtract 7 from y.
Expression: y - 7
(vi) 7 taken away from x. Subtract 7 from x.
Expression: x - 7
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

(vii) 2 less than the quotient of x and y. First divide x by y and from the result subtract 2.

Expression:
\sf(x)/(y)-2

(viii) 4 times x taken away from one third of y.

4 times x = 4 *x = 4x. subtract 4x from (1/3)y

Expression:
\sf (1)/(3)y-4x

(ix) Quotient of x by 3 is multiplied by y. Divide x by 3 and multiply the result by y.

Expression:
\sf (x)/(3)*y
