Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party were able to flourish because of the harsh conditions of the Treaty of Versailles that were placed on Germany following World War I, including reparations and territory losses. Tensions increased as a result of Hitler's aggressive expansionist ambitions, which were stoked by nationalist sentiments and a desire to right perceived wrongs. The League of Nations damaged the basis of global peace and cooperation by failing to handle and avert wars like the Italian invasion of Ethiopia and the Japanese invasion of Manchuria. In addition, some Western governments embraced an appeasement strategy in an effort to prevent future wars by caving in to Hitler's demands.
