Please help

6x - 16 + 18x = 80
The answer is x = 3. I am confused why you would bet 24x in this problem and not -12x for when you minus 18x by itself and then 6x to get -12x. Please explain it to me because I am confused and my test is Tommorow. Thank you in advance.

6x - 16 + 18x = 80

add 16 to both sides:

6x + 18x = 80 + 16

24x = 96

divide both sides by 24:

x = 96/24 = 4.

so x = 4
