I want to paint my kitchen that measures 50 feet by 30 feet; the

ceiling height is 16 feet. There are four windows that measure 24
inches by 30 inches. There is one doorway that is 36 inches by 80
inches. How many square yards will I need to paint?

  • 280 yd²

Find the area of the four walls:

  • A = Ph
  • A = 2(50 + 30)*16
  • A = 2560 ft²

Find the area of the (window and door) openings:

  • A = 4(24*30) + 36*80
  • A = 5760 in²

Convert it to ft² (1 ft = 12 in):

  • 5760*(1/12)² =
  • 5760*1/144 =
  • 40 ft²

Subtract it from total area of walls:

  • 2560 - 40 =
  • 2520 ft²

Convert the area to be painter to square yards (1 yd = 3 ft:

  • 2520 ft² =
  • 2520*(/3)² =
  • 2520*1/9 =
  • 280 yd²
