A city just opened a new playground for children in the community. An image of the land that the playground is on is shown. A polygon with a horizontal top side labeled 45 yards. The left vertical side is 25 yards. There is a dashed vertical line segment drawn from the right vertex of the top to the bottom right vertex. There is a dashed horizontal line from the bottom left vertex to the dashed vertical, leaving the length from that intersection to the bottom right vertex as 12 yards. There is another dashed horizontal line that comes from the vertex on the right that intersects the vertical dashed line, and it is labeled 14 yards. What is the area of the playground? 1,654 square yards 3,308 square yards 1,091 square yards

Answer:

1654 yd²

Explanation:

The playground is made up of three simple sections:

1) a rectangle 25 yd by 45 yd

2) a triangle with base 45 yd and height 12 yd

3) a triangle with base 37 yd and height 14 yd

The area of the playground is the sum of the areas of the three sections.

area of rectangle = LW

area of triangle = bh/2

total area = 25 × 45 yd² + 45 × 12/2 yd² + 37 × 14/2 yd²

total area = 1654 yd²
