There are multiple themes in Flowers for Algernon, but the main one would be intelligence. Charlie is striving to be a smart or “normal” person throughout the entire story. Unfortunately the kindness he had when he had a lower IQ faded and the new theme became “ignorance is bliss”. Charlie was a nicer and easier person to talk to when he did not know too much about the real world. Him realizing that his “friends” from work were actually making fun of him would be an example of how if he hadn’t gotten the surgery and knew way less, he would’ve been happier.
