What was the purpose of rationing in 1942?

Supplies such as gasoline, butter, sugar and canned milk were rationed because they needed to be diverted to the war effort. War also disrupted trade, limiting the availability of some goods.

To conserve supplies for battle and the soldiers. People would eat with little ingredients as possible and make clothes with the cheapest materials. Governments wanted to save money and materials for battles, to make weapons for the soldiers and to help feed and heal them.
