Have you ever wondered how many feathers cover a bird? That really depends on what kind of a bird. Hummingbirds, which are very
small, have about 940 feathers. By contrast, over 25,000 feathers cover a swan. Feathers serve the same purpose as mittens, hats, and heavy
coats: they help the birds stay warm. Many newborn birds, such as robins, are born bald. They have to stay in their nests to keep warm until
their feathers develop. Other baby birds, like ducklings, are born with a soft coat of fluffy down. They are ready to run, swim, and follow their
mothers around the lake.
