Madeline has $680 to spend at a bicycle store for some new gear and biking outfits. Assume all prices listed include tax.

She buys a new bicycle for $318.67.
She buys 2 bicycle reflectors for $12.89 each and a pair of bike gloves for $30.57.
She plans to spend some or all of the money she has left to buy new biking outfits for $78.20 each.

Write and solve an inequality which can be used to determine x, the number of outfits Madeline can purchase while staying within her budget.

If Madeline has $680 to spend at a bicycle store for some new gear and biking outfits. The inequality is:x≤3.9.

What is the inequality?

Let's x represent the number of biking outfits Madeline can purchase.

Inequality is:

318.67+2×12.89+30.57+78.20x≤680

Solve for x:

318.67+25.78+30.57+78.20x≤680

Combine like terms:

375.02+78.20x≤680

Subtract 375.02 from both sides:

78.20x≤304.98

Divide both sides by 78.20:

x≤ 304.98/78.20

x≤3.9

Based on the above calculation Madeline can only afford to buy a maximum of 3 bicycling costumes because x is the number of clothing and it must be a whole number.
