Abnormalities in the mind are similar to abnormalities elsewhere in the body, they just aren't visible. In medicine the word trauma is used to describe physical and or mental damage.

Your body has to heal from both, you heal a broken leg by putting a cast on it and not walking on it. You "heal" alcoholism or other addictions the same way, removing the trigger and staying away from it until you no longer feel you need it

Another example is training your mind. Just like a muscle you need to work it out or it will atrophy, if you have weak arms you need to train them to make them stronger, just like your brain.
