The inmates were housed in big barracks, sleeping a few to a shelf, with one blanket for them all (or no blanket)

Food was scarce and mostly inedible (often grass and dirt were mixed into the "soup")

They were forced to stand for hours each day at "appell" when they were counted, and forced to do hard work in many camps.

There was no medical care, the ill were shot or gassed.
