The line from center of the circle perpendicularly biscets chord. Hence, you can form a right-angled triangle with the radius as the hypotenuse (See picture)

So now you use Pythagoras theorem to solve for d:
a^2 +b^2 =c^2

12^2 +b^2 = 13^2

b^2 = 13^2 - 12^2

b =
\sqrt{13^(2)-12^(2) }

b= 5

Hence, d = 5
