Explanation:

  1. There are 4 boxes containing y number of pens. This means that in 4 boxes there are y pens so we multiply 4 and y.
  2. The teacher then takes 6 pens out so you minus the amount of pens from the 4y leaving 4y - 6.
  3. The teacher then asks the students to share the pens out between 17 of them equally. To do this you must divide by 17 to get an equal number of pens for each student.
  4. This means the correct expression is
    (4y - 6)/(17)
