General Austrian nationalism really grew from Catholic nationalism at the time. This is important because nationalists need to feel threatened in order to take action, and in this case, the Catholics felt culturally threatened by the contemporary Prussians, who were largely Protestant. This divided the two groups, which, in tandem with many other geographically close multinational splits, weakened the unity of the Austrian and Ottoman empires and ultimately led to their declination.
