General MacArthur had to leave the Philippines and the island of Corregidor in order to avoid being captured by the Japanese. After the Japanese invaded the Philippines in 1942, MacArthur and his troops were forced to retreat to the Bataan Peninsula. When it became clear that the Japanese were about to overrun the peninsula, MacArthur and his troops were evacuated to Australia in March 1942.
