In chapter 19 of "The Giver," Lois Lowry describes Jonas' feelings as he tries to escape from the community. Specifically, she writes, "The pain in his leg was forgotten. The terror of the plane was gone. He felt only a great sense of release, of being free at last" (Lowry 152). This text evidence shows that Jonas' physical pain and fear have been replaced by a feeling of liberation as he begins his journey to a new life outside of the community.
