The reason why the author included details about MLK's childhood and the society of the time he lived in was to show why in his adult life MLK chose to fight for civil rights. Another reason could also be to make the reader feel a deeper connection with MLK and his goals, causing the audience to sympathize and emphathize with MLK and is dream for equality.
