The Moorish people have been historically associated with the Maghreb, which includes modern-day Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya, as well as the Iberian Peninsula, which includes modern-day Spain and Portugal. They have also been associated with Sicily, an island in the Mediterranean Sea, during the medieval period. In modern times, the name "Moors" is mostly used by Europeans to describe Muslim populations of North Africa and the Iberian Peninsula during the Middle Ages. The term has also been used in a broader sense to refer to Muslims in general, especially those of Arab or Berber descent, whether living in Spain or North Africa.
