Surface area scales proportionally with the scale factor meaning if one shape has a surface area of 2 and is scaled up 3 times, it would simply be 2*3 so the final shape will have a surface area of 6.

The starting shape(left) has a surface area of 12 and the resulting shape(right) has a surface area of 3.

What we have to solve is 12 times what scale is equal to 3. or 12x=3 where x is the scale factor

To solve this equation we divide 12 on both sides to get x = 3/12 or simplified, 1/4.

So the scale factor is 1/4 because 12 times 1/4 is 3
