The Viking Age carver's tools, as with the carpentry tools discussed above, were quite similar to those used today, and would have consisted primarily of knives, chisels, gouges, and files or rasps.

"hook knife." The hook knife was perfect for carving out the interior of a bowl since it had a sharp, curved blade and a hook at the end. The rough shape of the bowl would be carved out by the Viking artisans using the hook knife, and the final shape and surface would be refined and smoothed out using chisels and scrapers.
