The two types of waves are transverse waves and longitudinal waves. In a transverse wave, the particles of the medium move perpendicular to the direction of the wave. In a longitudinal wave, the particles of the medium move parallel to the direction of the wave.

Waves come in two kinds, longitudinal and transverse. Transverse waves are like those on water, with the surface going up and down, and longitudinal waves are like of those of sound, consisting of alternating compressions and rarefactions in a medium.
