This is my best guess for what this would be. The reason: when Massachusetts was founded, there was little tolerance for anything but Puritans. Some colonies had more tolerance but were catered more towards certain groups (I.e. Maryland for Catholics). Other colonies like Pennsylvania welcomed pretty much anyone. By the time the colonies became the USA, religions were tolerated most everywhere.
