1968 was known as a year of turmoil. Many people lost confidence in President Johnson's administration with the uprisings in Vietnam. MLK, Jr. organized marches to advocate for anti-poverty measures and was later killed by a white assassin. Robert Kennedy was also assassinated this year. The upheaval caused the police to come in, who assaulted many marchers. Throughout the world, many young radicals challenged political structures, demanding similar things as protests in the US like education reform and personal liberation. Richard Nixon won the election, promising a commitment to law and order.
