John Singer Sargent made an alteration to Madame X (1883-1884) by repainting the right strap. The original painting depicted the right strap of Madame X's dress hanging off her shoulder, which was considered scandalous at the time. After the painting was first exhibited, Sargent repainted the strap to be securely fastened to the dress, in order to tone down the sexual suggestiveness of the original painting. This alteration did not completely satisfy the critics of the time, however, and the painting remained controversial.
