White matter in the brain consists mainly of axons, which are the long projections of nerve cells that carry signals between different regions of the brain. Grey matter, on the other hand, contains mainly the cell bodies and dendrites of nerve cells, as well as synapses (connections between nerve cells). Grey matter is located mainly in the outer regions of the brain, while white matter is located deeper within the brain.
