Webster volunteered for the U.S. Army in 1943. He was assigned as a machine gunner to Easy Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. He made a jump at Fort Benning and completed training at Camp Mackall and Camp Shanks.
