Cut a 14-ft beam into two pieces so that one piece is 6 in. longer than the other. Find the length of the two pieces.

Answer:

6 ft 9 ins and 7 ft 3 ins.

Explanation:

If one piece is x feet long the the other is x + 0.5 feet long. So:

x + x + 0.5 = 14

2x = 13.5

x = 6.75 ft.

So the 2 pieces are 6.75 and 7.25 ft long

= 6 ft 9 ins and 7 ft 3 ins,
