The volume of a gas in a container varies inversely as the pressure on the gas. If a gas has a volume of 208 cubic inches under a pressure of 4 pounds per square inch, what will be its volume if the pressure is increased to 5 pounds per square inch? Answer:

  • 166.4 in³

---------------------------

Inverse variation equation:

  • y = k/x, where k - constant

We have:

  • V = k/P, where V - volume, P - pressure

Substitute initial values and find the value of k:

  • 208 = k/4
  • k = 208*4
  • k = 832

The equation now becomes:

  • V = 832/P

Find the value of V when P = 5:

  • V = 832/5
  • V = 166.4

Hence the answer is 166.4 in³.
