Christopher Columbus was working for the Catholic monarchs of Spain, King Ferdinand II of Aragon and Queen Isabella I of Castile, when he sailed west from Europe in 1492. The Spanish monarchs funded Columbus's voyage in the hopes of discovering a western trade route to Asia, specifically to the East Indies, in order to bypass the Ottoman Empire's control over the traditional land and sea routes.
