2. Germany promised U.S. territory to Mexico
Germany encouraged Mexico to invade the United States if the U.S. was to get involved with the Allies during WWI. The encouragement came as a way for Mexico to regain territory they lost in the Mexican-American War. Germany wanted Mexico’s invasion to shift the U.S. focus to defending their land over stopping Germany’s invasion of France. They were concerned that if the United States joined the war, German forces would be pushed out of France and become weak, preventing them from securing a victory in WWI.
