After an RNA primer is laid complementary to the DNA template strand by primase, DNA polymerase continues to add successive nucleotides.

The lagging strand, which runs in the direction away from the closest replication fork, has to be made in fragments known as Okazaki fragments. After DNA polymerase hits the next primer while running in the 5' to 3' direction, it has to disconnect and reattach itself to the next RNA primer.
