Inspector Howard
Who's Telling the Truth?
Inspector Howard is investigating a robbery at the local high school.
He is questioning witnesses, but everyone has a different story. Read
each witnesses' account. Then answer the questions.
Jerry: When I came out of class, Erin's locker was wide open. I know it was
Erin's locker because I meet her there every day after class, First I noticed she
wasn't there, then I noticed her locker was open. I was going to shut it for her,
but then I thought that maybe someone had broken into it, and I should tell a
teacher instead.
Jack: Erin's locker wasn't open when I got there. She was supposed to let me copy her notes from
yesterday's history class because I was out sick. I waited by her locker for 5 minutes but she didn't
show up. I had a class, so I just took off. I never saw Erin's locker open.
Mr. Michaels: When Jack popped his head back in the classroom and said Erin's locker was open, I
didn't think much about it, at first. The lockers don't always shut right. I thought that maybe she hadn't
latched it all the way and it had just swung back open by itself. But when I took a closer look I saw that
the handle and the place where the lock goes were dented. And the lock was nowhere to be seen. I
think someone broke off the lock, and bent the whole mechanism so much that the locker won't stay
shut anymore.

Answer:

Jerry and Jack's stories differ in several ways. Jerry claims that Erin's locker was open when he arrived, and that he noticed it was open because he meets Erin at her locker every day after class. He also says that he considered shutting the locker for her, but decided to tell a teacher instead because he thought someone might have broken into it. On the other hand, Jack claims that Erin's locker wasn't open when he got there. He says he was waiting by her locker for five minutes because he was supposed to copy her notes from a previous class, but she never showed up. He left to go to his own class without ever seeing Erin's locker open.
