How can a person's self-presentation communicate both Independence and desire for acceptance at the same time?

A person could do this if they want to have their own unique appearance, but look up to someone for this style. So a person could dress for themselves but get that information from someone body else. this ultimately is doing it for themselves and wanted to conform and be like that person.
