Why would a narrator use different dialect than the rest of the characters?

For example, in a book I am reading, the narrator uses a dialect that is fancier than the rest of the characters southern dialect, which makes the narrator seem more educated. Why did the author use this literary choice?

To showcase a perspective above the characters and storyline. Meaning, the narrator is above all.

(or something like that)
