B-in 1857, the US Supreme Court issued the Dred Scott v. Sanford decision could be a violation of the "unalienable rights" listed in the Declaration of Independence. The decision declared that African Americans, whether free or enslaved, could not be considered citizens of the United States and therefore were not entitled to the rights and protections of the Constitution. This decision violated the Declaration's assertion that "all men are created equal" and are endowed with "certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."
