The group established in Georgia in 1960 to gather state residents' sentiments regarding desegregation and report back to the governor was called the Georgia Commission on Education. The Commission was created by Governor Ernest Vandiver, who was opposed to the desegregation of schools, in order to provide a voice for segregationist sentiments in the state. The Commission's findings were used to support the governor's efforts to maintain segregation in Georgia's public schools.
