Korea was ruled as a part of the Empire of Japan from 1910 to 1945! Japanese rule over Korea ended on 15 August 1945 with the surrender of Japan in World War II. United States and the Soviet Union liberated Korea from 35 years of Japanese rule. When Japan was defeated in World War II, Soviet forces took control of the North, and American forces took control of the South, with the 38th parallel as the agreed-upon dividing line. South Korea is independent as of August 15, 1945, and North Korea as of September 9, 1945.
