What is causing the Moon to move further away from us? How fast is it happening

The Moon's orbit must increase in order to maintain the system's overall momentum, which is conserved by slowing the Earth's rotation. Around 1.49 inches (3.78 centimeters) of the Moon's distance from Earth is gained per year.
Also, as it gets farther away, Earth's spin slows and its orbital period lengthens.
