The phospholipid bilayer that makes up the cell membrane, also known as the plasma membrane, is arranged with hydrophilic heads facing outward and hydrophobic tails facing inward. Both essential and peripheral proteins are embedded in this bilayer and support a number of cellular processes, including signaling and transport.
Cholesterol molecules improve the fluidity and stability of membranes. On the extracellular side, carbohydrates are involved in cell adhesion and recognition through the formation of glycolipids and glycoproteins. This fluid mosaic model permits dynamic molecular movement, controlling material transit while preserving the integrity and communication capacities of the cell.
