a soldier even claimed that the rats in the trenches could be as big as cats (harry patch) and sometimes they would wake up to oversized rats crawling on their face. these rats carried diseases and some people would put cats around the place to stop them from coming in the trench. also though it was rare, some soldiers would try to catch and kill the rats to eat them bc there wasnt much food.
