Select two points on the line that occur on the corners of two grid squares. Sketch a right angle triangle and label the change in Y and the change in X. Divide the change in Y by the change in X to find M.

The gradient of a line is just the "rise" divided by the "run." It's how much the line goes up (or down) for every step to the right. You can find it by taking the difference in the vertical direction and dividing it by the difference in the horizontal direction between two points on the line.
