In the late 1700s, Napoleon and his troops are invading Egypt and they stumble across the Rosetta Stone while digging up fortifications. It's discovery was the turning point in Egyptology. It was because of this rock that experts were able to understand hieroglyphics. Before the Rosetta Stone, no one could understand them. They were just strange shapes and symbols.
