a is positive and b is negative

Explanation:

ok, since |a-b| is the absolute value of a-b, so whatever a-b is gonna be it must end up positive

a + b can't both be positive because then a+b not equal to a-b

a cant be negative ever because that would conflict with the absolute value part of the right side of the equation

thus a must be positive and b must be negative
