Wayne is hanging a string of lights 50 feet long around the three sides of his rectangular patio, which is adjacent to his house. The length of his patio, the side along the house, is 6 feet longer than twice its width. Find the length and width of the patio.

Explanation:

rectangular patio.

one length is the side of the house (and no string of lights).

so, we know then

length + 2×width = 50 ft

and we know

length = 2×width + 6

me we can use that identity in the first equation and get

(2×width + 6) + 2×width = 50 ft

4×width + 6 = 50 ft

4×width = 44 ft

width = 11 ft

therefore,

length = 2×width + 6 = 2×11 + 6 = 22 + 6 = 28 ft
