How did the byzantine empire carry on the culture and traditions of the old roman empire?

Since Roman Law remained the foundation of the Empire, the Emperor Justinian commissioned the Justinian Code, which codified nearly a thousand years of Roman Law. This Code became the basis of the legal traditions of much of Western Europe. Hope this helps
