Total :

x + y = 10,223 - - - (1)

Proportion of apple to taffy

x / y = 1 / 69.6

Cross multiply :

y = 69.6x

(1) becomes :

x + 69.6x = 10223

70.6x = 10223

x = 10223 / 70.6

x = 144.80169

Put x = 144.80169 in

y = 10223 - x

y = 10223 - 144.80169

y = 10078.19831

Pounds of apple used = 10,078.20
